What is Orton-Gillingham?
The Orton-Gillingham Approach (OG) was developed over a century ago by neurologist Dr. Samual T. Orton and educator Anna Gillingham. Dr. Orton’s groundbreaking research defined the profile of the dyslexic learner, and laid the foundation for what is now referred to as structured literacy. The OG Approach remains the gold standard for dyslexia instruction, utilizing structured, sequential, and multisensory techniques to teach reading, spelling, and writing.
OG lessons are tailored to each student's learning style, using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways to optimize learning. This individualized approach helps students build confidence and achieve success in reading, spelling, and writing at their own pace. Over time, this method strengthens the brain's reading network, improving accuracy and fluency.
The Orton-Gillingham Academy
Founded in 1995, the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) upholds professional and ethical standards for OG practitioners. The OGA certifies practitioners, accredits training programs, and promotes public awareness of the educational needs of individuals with dyslexia. The OGA ensures that the Orton-Gillingham Approach remains a trusted and effective method for treating dyslexia and supporting literacy for all learners.
Expert Training for Educators
At Shoreline Reading, our OGA accredited training team offers Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator (CE) and Associate level courses, and the Orton-Gillingham practicum at each level. We have trained hundreds of individual teachers in both public and private schools. We also work with districts that want to implement Orton-Gillingham and structured literacy on a broad scale, coming on-site to offer district-wide OG training and practicum. Our trainers are certified OG practitioners at the Fellow Level with both public and private school classroom experience. Our trainer’s experience in the classroom allows them to understand the unique challenges today’s educators face and to support them as they bring structured literacy into the classroom to meet the needs of their students.
